Blue & Gold Banquet

Last week was our ward's Blue and Gold Banquet. It was a fun event and one Reed had been looking forward to for a while largely because this would be his first chance to design his own cake for the event. The theme for the banquet was "Scales and Tales" so it didn't take long for Reed to decide that Kaa (the python from Jungle Book) would be the perfect creation--complete with hypnotic eyes. I must say I had my doubts about the cake during certain stages of the process, but in the end I think it turned out great. It was our first adventure with fondant and I must say I'm a fan. (The marshmallow fondant was actually quite tasty, although Ruby just couldn't get herself to eat what she was sure was play dough.) Reed let our whole family get involved in the creating so we were all really proud of the finished product, considering we really had no idea what we were doing.

Sam always believed in the vision and I think he may have been even more pleased with it than Reed.

The other highlight of the dinner was of course the "Scales and Tales" animal show. The presenter brought a rat snake, wood turtle, and several birds of prey. The birds were of course our family's favorite, especially since they included both a peregrine falcon and a great horned owl. The boys were thrilled to get up close and personal with the inspiration behind their Halloween costumes.  Ruby, however, was terribly disappointed that there wasn't a flamingo tucked away in the crates.

This is no fake smile. He was loving it.

So were they. Max had taken a seat at the front on the floor, so I didn't capture any evidence of his excitement--but it was there.

After the animal presentation it was time to cut into the cakes and see the colorful tye-dye awesomeness inside. (Not to mention the delicious lime, cream cheese, whipped cream and white chocolate chip filling we had added to build the cake up a little. )

I'd say his award was spot on--definitely most hypnotic.
Good work Reed and Sam. I can hardly wait to see what you plan for next year.

That cake looks really cool (the Dickson family is a creative family), and Reed you make a very cute cub scout, and I am very glad that the birds did not mistake Ruby's hair for a nest :)
